Local heroes is an annual music gala celebrating the artists from Gävleborg county (Sweden). We were asked by the client; Arbetarbladet - to produce visuals for the event. This included 9 nomination videos for each award as well as a live broadcast.

The nomination videos were built around the idea of air travel and airports.

Local Heroes 2012 took place at Gävle Concert Hall on February 4th, 2012.

A different point of view (2011) is a film by Michael Larsson and Viktor Eriksson.

In the spring of 2010 video artists Michael and Viktor were introduced to a new dance project where traditional folk music would meet a theatrical setting. Martin Forsberg, the choreographer of the project; RESiDANS, met them for the first time at IDKA, the Institute of Digital Arts in Gävle, this was where ideas began to hatch.

The framework for the production was defined and set to only a few guidelines, such as rhythm and intensity, to allow a nearly free interpretation of what was going on in front of the camera. The captured material involved plenty of body movement, facial expression and communication between the dancers participating in the project. It was now time for the post production phase.

Unlike a normal edit, this film was created during a studio session where Michael and Viktor let the polska music guide images and sounds into an audiovisual experience in real time. With only image and sound sequences as core material the final version was the result of a improvisation where the two mediums merged through an integrated language.

Camera: Michael Larsson, Viktor Eriksson

		<description>

Fragments of the unseen - Hydra is an audiovisual performance.

In July 2011 Medea Electronique was invited to the Eleventh Plateau Festival to make a site specific fragment. Eleventh Plateau this year was dedicated to the environmental issues that Hydra faces. Although the picturesque port of Hydra overwhelms the visitor with its beauty, there is a hidden part of the island which is unseen from the majority of the visitors. Travelling to the outskirts of the island reveals another reality. An open garbage dump is burning in the forest which in return washes the remaining ashes to the sea. A recent fire burned the east side of the island and has left its mark next to the beautiful monastery which stands there for the last 350 years. Human interaction has destroyed what in other times could have been seen as a “paradise on earth”. Without any remorse some habitants of Hydra continue to destroy whatever is hidden behind the picturesque port of the island.

Art direction / edit: Michael Larsson
Dancer: Ioanna Kampylafka
Sound design: Manolis Manousakis

		<description>

“Each supplementary dimension cancels out the preceding ones.” - Jean Baudrillard

Zero-sum is a cycle in which the attempt to organise, identify, perceptually comprehend and sensorially immerse oneself takes place. By pushing the levels of awareness to its edge the strive becomes to push through any perceptual or projected layer in order to break beyond any outermost horizon in order to surpass or posses it. Simultaneously, the sum of these layers together, overshadow any attempt to re- main in a “pure” mentally and sensorially aware state. In the process of a constant layering the question then becomes, how many layers/horizons can one push through before potentially breaking? Then again, is it really breaking or is it rather a constant cycle in which, one is restored after fulfilling one lap? Will every lap along this trajectory become more and more tangible each time one passes “go”, bypass- ing the last known position with the help of memory and experience? In such case, does one also move further and further away from any form of grounding to ones surrounding? A disconnection.

On the elevated television set, the artist sells his work in the commercial featuring an energy drink, cockade. The commercial features woeful victims who personify both artists and audience as potential consumers. Advertised and lampooned as ‘fit for a king’, the beverage offers an instantaneous cure to everything from frustrations in life and employment, to seeking a brand new identity. However, the work, like the magical drink, might not be attainable, as it can only be seen through the glass window.

Feed-me is an experiment in the very core of what video is all about, an electronic signal. By using the video signal and looping it into itself by recording what is displayed and feed it back to the camera it causes bursts of light to flow onto the television surface.

In this experiment the video signal is being manipulated live through sound software and then being output again to the video loop, causing a superimposed image feed which is more controlled in direct relation to the manual manipulation.

X34-X48 is dealing with non-visual interferences in communication. These are varying around radio interferences which can be caused by solar flares. As the title reveals a magnitude of X34-X48 in the context of solar flare activity is enough to completely distort radio communication and permanently damage equipment located in orbit. The solar flare element is used in this work to show how interference can affect conversations and cause certain forms of unrest and confusion.

This experiment takes the viewer on an exploration in time, space and energy. Light becomes matter, it forms a part and extends the space, it can also be manipulated. When looking inside the space it becomes a mind dump for the participant performing there. Thoughts becomes visible and embedded in this defined realm. The existence within the space is transient, so is the performance. The thoughts however, persist the chain of events, in form of light.

If we could hear light, the world would be a noisy place. As a result of the fast pace life and the ever changing environment of the city dweller, one need to withstand noise of various kind that in one way or another intrudes or pollutes the space he or she resides or moves in. As with other components and elements in our surrounding excessive amounts can have a negative effect on as pace itself or the residents within. Light have not only the function of illuminating but to decorate as well. While it defines, creates contrast and distinction between spaces the collective intensity can at times lead to glare, glow, clutter and trespass.

The problem is that light is beautiful.
